Cocktail Time: Old Fashioned

Old Fashioned

Typically, I blog about a cocktail on Fridays – which seems apropos given the weekend is upon us.  Well – did you ever have one of those days when the thought of a good cocktail at the end of the day helps tremendously to help you (excuse the pun) muddle through?  Well for me – today is one of those days.

An Old Fashioned – which by its name hints that it’s been around a while is very simple in its ingredient list but packs a punch when it comes to flavor thanks to the combination of simple syrup and a few dashes of bitters.  The two of them counteract beautifully to make for a well-balanced, satisfying drink that, if you’re not careful, can send you into orbit!

Directions

Recipe:

2 ounces good bourbon (I like Maker’s Mark) or Rye – but I prefer bourbon for this
2 dashes Angostura bitters (you can find them in the cocktail section of your supermarket)
1 tbs simple syrup (made by combining equal parts white sugar and water, heated until sugar is completely melted.  Allow to cool – keep in a squeeze bottle for multiple uses later)
Garnish with Orange or Lemon slice/peel.

Method:

In a chilled rocks or high ball glass, combine the simple syrup and bitters until well mixed.  Add the Bourbon.  Mix again.  Add ice and mix a third time.  Enjoy!

A great day for me is preparing great meals for friends and family. I enjoy experimenting with new ingredients and also updating classics that I've enjoyed for years. I love to travel and try lots of new cuisines - and wouldn't be anything without the love of my family!
